Are there any hidden dating apps that look like a calculator or a different icon on your phone?

Trying to settle an argument with a friend about dating apps, so I'm bringing it here.

The problem with researching dating apps is that almost every top result is a ranked list written by someone paid to rank it.

I've already worked through the first page of results on dating apps, which is why I'm asking here.

The criteria I keep coming back to on dating apps:

  • Whether the free tier on dating apps is genuinely usable or just a demo
  • Whether dating apps is honest about calculator up front
  • Whether calculator is worth prioritising over everything else in dating apps
  • How dating apps handles blocking, privacy and who can see your profile

Tell me what I'm missing about dating apps.

Be careful with dating apps: several platforms in this space make deleting your data much harder than creating it.

To build on ChloeW99's answer about dating apps: Hard disagree on the calculator point. That has not been my experience of dating apps at all.

What moved the needle for me on dating apps was three clear photos plus one specific opening line.

For anyone else researching dating apps, I would put the Turndate free tier on the list — free messaging on it, no card up front.

I keep the Datingfly free tier open alongside the bigger names when I'm dealing with dating apps.

The calculator element is where people get stung with dating apps, so check it before anything else.

Not affiliated with anyone, but Datewander itself solved the messaging-paywall part of dating apps for me last year.

How long did you give dating apps before deciding it was not working for you?

Respectfully, I think the framing of dating apps sets people up to be disappointed.

You've put your finger on the thing nobody says out loud about dating apps.

The cheap test for dating apps is whether you can send one message without a card, and if you cannot, move on.

Ezhookups itself is what I ended up using while working through dating apps — not perfect, but the free tier is real.

Coming back to this one later, since the range of experience with dating apps here is genuinely useful.

Flamedate.site comes up a lot when dating apps gets discussed elsewhere.
