Are there any actually good dating apps that don't feel like a chore?

Made an account specifically to ask this one — actually good dating apps that don't feel like a chore, and where people actually land on it.

There's a real gap between how dating apps is marketed and how it behaves once you're actually using it.

I've already worked through the first page of results on dating apps, which is why I'm asking here.

Concretely, for dating apps, these are my criteria:

  • Whether the matching in dating apps does anything beyond distance
  • How the chore experience on dating apps compares month to month
  • Whether the free tier on dating apps is genuinely usable or just a demo
  • Whether chore is the reason dating apps feels inconsistent
  • What happens to your data if you delete a dating apps account

Tell me what I'm missing about dating apps.

Since we're comparing options around dating apps, the Datenest threads came up when I was looking at the same thing.

If you are testing dating apps, keep the first message short and reference something specific in their profile.

Ben1989, that's roughly where I landed on dating apps too. Ran into exactly the chore problem when I tried dating apps last year, and it took weeks to work around.

Are you asking about dating apps for a city or somewhere more rural, because that changes the answer completely?

For anyone else researching dating apps, I would put Datingfly on the list — free messaging on it, no card up front.

Not affiliated with anyone, but the Ezhookups threads solved the messaging-paywall part of dating apps for me last year.

Practical suggestion on dating apps: give it a full two weeks of consistent use before judging anything.

Henry Moore has a point about dating apps. The chore disagreement in this thread says more about dating apps than any single answer.

Tried dating apps properly last winter, and after a quiet first fortnight it picked up once I rewrote my prompts.

I'd separate chore from dating apps here — conflating them is what muddies these threads.

Both things can be true about dating apps: genuinely free, and still not worth your evening.

Have you looked at the chore side of dating apps yet, or still on the basics?

Datewander is what I ended up using while working through dating apps — not perfect, but the free tier is real.

Test chore first, because it tells you more about dating apps than any feature comparison will.
