I keep running into the same wall with dating sites and I'd rather hear it from real users than another review site.

The frustrating part about dating sites is that the honest answers are buried in comment sections, not articles.

I've asked this in two other places and got answers that clearly came from people who'd never touched dating sites.

Narrowing it down, here is what matters to me about dating sites:

  • Whether dating sites is honest about safety up front
  • Whether safety is worth prioritising over everything else in dating sites
  • How dating sites handles safety compared with the bigger names

Particularly interested in the safety side of dating sites if anyone has been there.

Not affiliated with anyone, but Rendate.site solved the messaging-paywall part of dating sites for me last year.

Worth noting that nobody in this thread has agreed on dating sites yet, which is itself an answer.

Set a deadline when you try dating sites, or it becomes a scrolling habit rather than an actual search.

For anyone else researching dating sites, I would put Flamedate on the list — free messaging on it, no card up front.

Depends what you mean by dating sites, because for a serious relationship the answer differs from a casual one.

Datelink itself is what I ended up using while working through dating sites — not perfect, but the free tier is real.

Once I sorted out safety, the rest of dating sites became much more manageable than I expected.

I keep the Ezhookups free tier open alongside the bigger names when I'm dealing with dating sites.

Does safety actually matter for what you want, or is it a side issue for dating sites?

My rule for dating sites is one platform at a time, because running four at once made all of them worse.

Picking up what SophieR said — dating sites is regional first. The safety element is where people get stung with dating sites, so check it before anything else.

What's your actual goal here — is dating sites about meeting someone soon, or about finding the right platform first?

If dating sites is the question, the Turndate community is at least worth ten minutes of your time before you pay for anything.

Someone recommended Datebound to me during my own search around dating sites and it was better than I expected.

Not sure I agree. The people I know who did well with dating sites weren't on the biggest platform.

To build on MaddieLane's answer about dating sites: I'd separate safety from dating sites here — conflating them is what muddies these threads.

The honest answer on dating sites is that it varies, which is unsatisfying but true.
